GH at the Paley Center
Last night I went to the Paley Center in Beverly Hills for an evening celebrating General Hospital's 50th anniversary. I was lucky to be able to attend--the event sold out almost immediately, but a friend of mine is a Paley member and was able to get tickets the day before they went on sale to the public. It was more than a bit surreal to be in a room with Tony Geary, Genie Francis, Jane Elliot, Jackie Zeman, Finola Hughes, Jason Thompson, Kimberly McCullough, Maurice Benard, Kirsten Storms, and John J. York--along with Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini, both of whom received a hero's welcome from the audience. (Other GH actors attended the event, though they weren't part of the panel discussion. Also present was John Beradino's widow.)
A couple of my favorite stories from the event...
In order to keep news of surprise cast returns from leaking out, they use code names in the scripts, to the confusion of the regular cast. Faison was "Bob"! Ethan was "Solomon"--and Tony Geary ended up asking, "Who the hell is Solomon?"
Jane Elliot said when she first started at GH, she had to go to the nurses' station and greet Nurse Jessie Brewer. She'd watched the show when she was a kid, and when she had to say "Miss Brewer..." the words stuck in her throat. She felt like she was suddenly inside the TV set!
