Title: Companions
Author: Gwynnega
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: For LJC. She requested Tegan Jovanka, Rose Tyler, the Brig, Ace, and OMG STUFF THAT BLOWS UP REAL GOOD. Takes place immediately after "Battlefield," but spoilers through "The Parting of the Ways." Thanks to Doyle for the beta read.
"Just a small explosion?" Ace held up the canister of nitro-9. She was sitting on the sofa with the Australian girl and the blonde girl in the Lethbridge-Stewart front room, waiting for the Professor to get back.
Tegan crossed her legs in an annoyed manner. "Do you have to? I deal with quite enough explosions traveling with the Doctor."
"I'm with you," Rose said. "I love traveling through time and space and all, but I've had my fill of explosions."
"Oh, you're no fun," Ace said, pouting. "I wish the Professor would get back already."
"Why do you call him the Professor?" Rose asked.
Earlier that evening, Ace and the Doctor had had supper with the Lethbridge-Stewarts, Ancelyn and Bambera. Then Doris had gone off to bed, and Ancelyn and Bambera had gone off someplace alone. Ace and the Doctor were about to say goodbye to the Brigadier when two blue police boxes had appeared on the front lawn. A bunch of people had got out, two of whom called themselves the Doctor. One of them, who wore a pinstripe suit and trainers, said that a time rift had been created by Morgaine, and only they could fix it. Ace had wanted to go along - so had Rose and Tegan and this ginger-haired bloke named Turlough - but all three Doctors had insisted it was a matter for Time Lords only. And off they went in one of the TARDISes.
That was hours ago, and Ace was beginning to worry. Besides, she was bored, and more than a little disturbed to learn that the Doctor sometimes changed into other people.
"I think he wanted to spend some time with his other selves," Rose said. "I mean, what with the other Time Lords being - " And she stopped.
"Being what?" Tegan asked. Rose shook her head and busied herself removing a fleck of dust from her T-shirt.
Just then the Brigadier and Turlough came in from the kitchen, the Brigadier carrying a tray with coffees. "Seems like it might be a long night," he said. "Thought we could use some reinforcements."
"Brigadier," Ace said, holding up the nitro-9 canister, "you wouldn't mind if I used this, would you? In the back garden, maybe? I promise I'll clean up after. Just a tiny explosion? You like explosions - I know you do."
"I don't think my wife would appreciate that, Ace. Besides, I don't much appreciate explosions for their own sake. I prefer them when they're in the service of stopping some unspeakable evil, some invading alien army, perhaps some extraterrestrial maggots...that sort of thing."
"Extraterrestrial maggots?" Ace said. "Wicked!"
"Exactly," the Brigadier said.
"Sounds revolting," Tegan said, and took a sip of coffee. "Where has the Doctor got to, anyway? The Doctors, I mean."
"He should've let me help," Rose said. "It's not as if I haven't helped save the world a few times. And it's not as if I can't handle seeing more than one of him. I know about the whole regeneration business. I've seen it happen." Her face grew grave.
"So've I," Tegan said. "He used to have all this curly hair, and he wore a long scarf. Then, next thing I knew, he'd changed." She smiled to herself. "Much for the better, I think."
"I'm not sure I understand the celery-on-the-lapel thing," Rose said, "or the cricket outfit. Your Doctor is cute, though. You should've seen the Doctor when I first met him. He used to wear a leather jacket."
"The Doctor?" Ace, Tegan and Turlough chorused.
"Well, I've known the Doctor in several of his incarnations," the Brigadier affirmed, "and I can honestly say they're all splendid chaps."
"I think I'd be quite upset if the Professor changed," Ace said. "I like him the way he is."
Rose smiled. "I understand. Maybe you won't have to go through it. But if you do, it's not the end of the world. He'll still be the Doctor."
Just then, a familiar sound made them look out the window at the materializing TARDIS. The door opened, and three men emerged, looking no worse for wear.
"The Professor's back,"Ace said, thoughts of explosions temporarily forgotten. Her new friends were smiling too. It was nice to know that the Doctor had people who cared about him in other times and places, when she couldn't be with him.
"Yes," the Brigadier said. "Splendid chaps, each and every one."
