Today I had a headache and didn't feel up to driving to LAX-ville for LosCon. So I worked on the Jo book and then took myself to the movies. After that, I bought myself a DVD of the Weathermen movie for novel research (I've seen it, but wanted to have it for reference) and Eavan Boland's New Collected Poems at Skylight.

The movie I saw? Twilight! It was at best amusing, though I longed for a remote control during the very slow first half hour. The actors who played Bella and Edward couldn't seem to muster more than vacuous prettiness, especially compared to nearly the entire supporting cast. Bella's parents, the Cullen family, the high school kids, the werewolf gang--all of 'em were so much more interesting and engaging than Miss Emo Sue and Mr. Vapid Vampire (Vappire?). The Edward actor made S1-era BtVS David Boreanaz look like Olivier. Also, the amount of lipstick he wore was out of control, and the sparkle effect was lame in the extreme. Other than that, the film was visually lovely, with all that lush green scenery.

The biggest surprise for me was that the most boring, pointless episode in the book--vampire baseball!--was far and away my favorite scene in the film. The scene was fun and dynamic, and showcased all the personalities of the Cullen family. Bella was mostly in the background, and it wasn't all about the Big Emo Love.

The Bella actress managed to give Bella even less of an inner life than the book. And even more than in the book, the Edward actor portrayed Edward as VERY seventeen, with none of the depth one would expect for someone who's been around so long.

The audience (mostly teenagers and twenty-somethings) seemed to be happily swooning--though when Hospitalized!Bella insisted on staying with Edward despite the danger, a few people snickered.

and being stuck in the theater probably helped as well*g*, much easier to turn off your vlc player, than it is to get out of a movie theater in the middle of a movie*eg*
