The 1975-76 Trans World Getaway Guide to New York I bought on eBay arrived today. (I think I may have had an earlier edition when I spent the summer on the east coast with my parents in 1973.) It makes me want to hop on the next plane to NYC, but more than that, to time-travel back to NYC circa '75.
But it's bizarre to note that, in many ways, 1975 now seems like another planet.
A few quotes from the book:
(From "New York After Dark"): "Nowadays, with Women's Lib in the ascendant, ladies solo or in tandem can count on being welcomed everywhere. Even McSorley's Ale House, 15 East Seventh Street, that erstwhile century-old sanctuary for males, was 'liberated' a few summers ago. (Caution: any distaffers inclined toward a visit to this East Village outpost should be advised that separate plumbing facilities have not been installed for the ladies.) Drinks average $1.75 or more in the fancier places, somewhat less elsewhere."
"The Shrink Scene: or Can Psychology Be Fun?"
"Walk east along 34th Street now until you get to Ohrbach's, one of New York's great bargain stores. . . but in its Oval Room you'll find some of the finest clothing in town. This is where the society women line up at 7:30 in the morning when Ohrbach does its line-for-line copies of the Paris designers."
"If you want cocktails before lunch, plan on spending at least $1.25 per drink."
