A very happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] viciouswishes, [livejournal.com profile] tithenai, and [livejournal.com profile] seajules!!!

One of the fun things about the novel I'm writing is that I can read a trashy book like Soap Opera Babylon: The Shocking True Stories Behind the Lives of the Stars (1987) and justify it as research. It has chapter titles like "Backstage Bitchery and Blind Ambition" and "Backstage Affairs."

Other books I own for novel research:

Big Lou: The Life & Career of Actor Louis Edmonds, by Craig Hamrick (soap actor bio)

Grayson Hall: A Hard Act to Follow, by R.J. Jamison (soap actor bio)

Dark Shadows Memories, Kathryn Leigh Scott

Soap Opera, by Eileen Fulton (novel by long-time soap actress)

Outlaws of America: The Weather Underground and the Politics of Solidarity, by Dan Berger

Fugitive Days: Memoirs of an Antiwar Activist, by Bill Ayers (who is probably really happy the election is over)

Flying Close to the Sun by Cathy Wilkerson (also of the Weather Underground)

Actors and radicals!!! It's the combination of the two (plus a pissed-off ghost) that makes this novel interesting to me...but it's no wonder I've had such a hard time coming up with a title for the book. I'm working on chapter eleven, but I need to do some thinking/planning/online researching before I go full steam ahead with it.

The weather is unusually cold for LA--highs somewhere in the fifties, and not supposed to get any warmer all week, which is fine by me. I am wearing BPAL Gelt, which is very chocolatey and is making me crave chocolate.

Today I went to Dark Delicacies Bookstore in Burbank for a BPAL in-store. Scents I bought: Gelt, The Rose, and Sugar Cookie, plus Proserpina bath oil. This weekend I've also worked on chapter ten (and will do more this evening) and rewatched Tootsie (for novel research). My novel research viewing for the Jo book is such an odd melange of soap opera/acting stuff and political violence/war stuff.

It is henna day, and I've been watching Dark Shadows and reading The James Joyce Murder and pondering the recalcitrant chapter seven of the Jo book.

Last night I watched the 1974 Vietnam documentary Hearts and Minds (for Jo book research), which completely gutted me, especially given the parallels with Iraq.

Lines from The James Joyce Murder that made me laugh:

"Let us, therefore, try to see this whole situation as the police are going to see it, and not as we would like to have it represented in a beautifully wrought novel by a writer of exquisite sensibility."

"Another doctoral candidate, acting as scholar and researcher, who seems to combine the manner of Oscar Wilde with the sex life of Frank Harris."

Heeee.

I ordered some stuff from the new BPAL update:

PUMPKIN III
Pumpkin with pink grapefruit, lemon verbena, yuzu, lime, parsley, and mint.

PUMPKIN V
Pumpkin with cranberry, strawberry, red musk, red rose, rosehip, frankincense, fig, jasmine, and carnation.

KATRINA VAN TASSEL
White rose and honeyed cream.

I just wish they were selling last year's Pumpkin III with pomegranate in it again, because my bottle is getting perilously close to empty, and it's my favorite everyday scent.

Time to rinse out my hair...

A little late, but: happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] voleuse!!!

Two BPAL reviews from recently received frimps:

MIDNIGHT KISS
Eternal desire, unquenchable passion: red musk, cocoa absolute, Nepalese amber, red sandalwood, aged patchouli, nicotiana, and blood wine.

On me this smells almost exactly like Snake Oil, which is good, though not something I'm often in the mood to wear. Thankfully the patchouli doesn't come through at all.

DRINK ME
However, this bottle was not marked `poison,' so Alice ventured to taste it, and finding it very nice, (it had, in fact, a sort of mixed flavour of cherry-tart, custard, pine-apple, roast turkey, toffee, and hot buttered toast,) she very soon finished it off.

A very sweet, light, cake-y scent, similar to Eat Me, but I like it better in theory than actually wearing it.

I finally got caught up with the Sarah Jane Adventures... )

Hooray, someone posted Christine Ebersole's hilarious rendition of "A Stormy Kind of Love" from Ryan's Hope to YouTube! (Oh baby.)

There's also another great Christine Ebersole scene here, in which Lily Darnell explains psychotheatrics to Roger. Heeee.

In BPAL news, I've tried Pumpkin I and Pumpkin III.

PUMPKIN I
Pumpkin with pear, white wine grapes, and jasmine-laced tea.

This is unfortunately a little heavy on the grape (as in grape juice), with the pumpkin barely asserting itself.

PUMPKIN III
Pumpkin with white chocolate, caramel, pomegranate, and cream.

Very sweet and creamy, but again not very pumpkiny. Mostly I smell the caramel and pomegranate...

Got my BPAL order last night: Pumpkin Patch #1, 3, and 5, plus a bunch of frimps. This morning I tried Pumpkin #5.

PUMPKIN V
Pumpkin with benzoin, bourbon vanilla, lemon peel, neroli, blood orange, and red ginger.

In the bottle it smells almost identical to Pumpkin Queen, which I love. Wet, it's very similar too, but a little more tangy. When it dried down, it turned to a sort of orange chocolate scent, which I guess is the blood orange and the vanilla, and the pumpkin mostly vanished. A sweeter, less complex scent than Pumpkin Queen, but I like it.

So far I've been successfully avoiding all the new TV shows, as I don't want to add more TV watching time to my schedule. I may try Pushing Daisies, though, since everyone loves it. I wanted to watch Supernatural last night, but I got started dl'ing too late, so I must wait to see it tonight, argh!!!

Ryan's Hope has been amazing this week, especially Bernard Barrow (Johnny), Michael Levin (Jack), Ilene Kristen (Delia), and most of all, Ron Hale (Roger). The only real weak link is the wooden, teleprompter-reading Michael Hawkins (Frank #1)...especially painful if you've seen the excellent actors who followed him in the role.

I worked on the chapter three revisions at lunch today, as every day this week. Doing a lot of rethinking and embroidering, scribbling longhand on the draft. This weekend I'll sit down at the computer and try to make sense of all the scribbles.

Because of the dearth of Ryan's Hope currently airing on Soapnet (not to mention Another World being yanked off altogether) this afternoon I watched a couple of episodes of Search for Tomorrow from 1984 on the P&G Classic Soaps website. They also have a bunch of Another World, Edge of Night, Texas, and other shows. The eps are in immaculate condition and look great full-screen on my computer. The two eps of Search for Tomorrow I watched featured Ryan's Hope veterans: Michael Corbett (Michael Pavel), the little girl who played Jack's daughter Ryan, and the Man in the Green Hat (playing a cop!). (Also a very young Matthew Ashford, later of Days & GH.) Plus I know Louise Shaffer and Malachai McCourt are on the show as well.

Now if only ABC would get a clue and do a similar site for the shows they own (Ryan's Hope, classic eps of GH, AMC, OLTL, etc.). And if only Soapnet would get a clue and start airing RH five days a week again...

According to BPAL, Red Devil is "A sinfully playful lust blend. Inspires sexual spontaneity, a little bit of kinkiness, and new and inventive ways to get dirty." Ironically enough, on me it smells like soap. A sweet, spicy soap, but soap nonetheless. Pleasant enough, but fairly boring - and above all, very clean! Weird.

(And on an unrelated subject: it's just a week until the new Doctor Who! Wheeee!)

yesterday's Ryan's Hope )

After a string of terrific eps, I was very underwhelmed by last night's Supernatural, to the point that I felt I'd wasted an hour and wished I'd spent it watching Life on Mars ep 4 instead. Ah well, at least I got some more chapter 22 work done last night...
