Sep. 12th, 2009 02:24 pmI'm more than two-thirds through the second draft of the Jo book, and I've hit that point where I'm both thoroughly engrossed and enjoying it and impatient to be done with it already. It doesn't help that chapter 17 is long, complicated, and requiring a fair bit of research.
One kind of research has to do with the soap opera bedroom scene Jo's doing in chapter 17. I've recently seen a few Ryan's Hope bedroom scenes from 1979, which are of the classic "man bare to the waist, woman apparently topless but with a sheet securely wedged under her armpits" variety. But Jo's scene occurs in 1976, so last night I looked at some mid-70s Ryan's Hope scenes. In one, Jack and Mary are in bed after sex. Jack is shirtless, but Mary is wearing a rather bulky blue robe, which she says she found in Jack's closet. In another, Pat and Faith are in bed after sex. Pat: shirtless. Faith: wearing Jack's blue robe! I'm pretty sure I've seen other Ryan's Hope characters wearing the same robe. Heck, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if Jo ended up wearing it while my back is turned.
