more about WisCon
Jun. 2nd, 2010 03:00 pmI'm sure glad I gave myself a day at home to regroup after WisCon. I don't have con crud, but I feel draggy, plus my legs are stiff from the cramped airplane ride from Chicago. (Boy, there was a lot of turbulence on that flight. The pilot only turned off the fasten seatbelt sign for about an hour.)
Books I bought at WisCon (all from Aqueduct Press, as it turns out):
Suzy McKee Charnas--Dorothea Dreams
Helen Merrick--The Secret Feminist Cabal: A Cultural History of Science Fiction Feminisms
Ellen Klages and Geoff Ryman--What Remains: Stories and Interviews
Also I got my contributor's copy of The Wiscon Chronicles, Volume 4, yay!
I don't think I went to as many panels as in previous years, but I did see some good ones, including the Chicks Dig Time Lords panel, a marvelous Politics of Steampunk panel featuring Nisi Shawl, Amal El-Mohtar, Theodora Goss, Liz Gorinsky, Jaymee Goh, and Piglet, and academic papers on Superhero Comics as Fan Fiction (Karen Healey) and Wonder Woman as Women's Lib Activist (Ann Matsuuchi) (about Samuel R. Delany's short-lived stint writing Wonder Woman in the early 70s).
The vampire panel I was on (Does Vampire Fiction Undermine Feminism?, with Alan Bostick, Alex Bledsoe, and Jessica Kaiser) was a lot of fun. (Does vampire fiction undermine feminism? Yes and no.) I was delighted that Suzy McKee Charnas sat in the front row and participated enthusiastically.
I got to meet my Fox Literary compatriot Katharine Beutner, and we ended up reading back to back at the Broad Universe Reading. I read "The Clockwork Cat's Escape," and she read the prologue from her recently published novel Alcestis.
The Tiptree auction was hilarious as usual, making it hard for me to tear myself away to join
nwhepcat at the awesome vid party. At the Dessert Salon, the reigning champion dessert continued to be the chocolate decadence cake with raspberry sauce. Nnedi Okorafor and Mary Anne Mohanraj both gave inspiring Guest of Honor speeches, and it was great to see Greer Gilman win a Tiptree Award (though that made me late getting to the Fanfic: Threat or Menace? panel).
Despite the twin tragedies of No Butterscotch Pudding at the Concourse and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich Place being closed on Memorial Day, there was plenty of good food to be had. At the gelato place I tried the maple bacon gelato, and it was actually very good!
It was so great to hang out with Hepcat and
general_jinjur and
huzzlewhat and
likeadeuce and many others.
Next up, Readercon!
