On today's Ryan's Hope: In a brave move that will cause him a whole lot of trouble, Seneca pulled the plug on poor Nell's respirator. Nell!!!!! ::sniffle::

GH sweeps: I had mixed feelings about the Black & White Ball storyline.

The Bad: Too many maniacs. Did we really need Anthony Zacchara, Maniac #1,204? Also, too much stealing from previous sweeps (sewing up Ric with a fishing line, Luke having two coronaries--but at least managing to pull through, unlike Alan in the last sweeps). And at this rate (AJ Lila Alan Justus Emily RIP), there soon won't be any more Quartermaines left! (Although admittedly, killing off Emily was probably the right move--the writers had seemingly run out of stories for her, and she and Nikolas rarely had great chemistry. If she had still been played by Amber Tamblyn, it would've been a different story!)

The Good: Everyone's been acting the hell out of the Emily's Death storyline - especially Tyler Christopher (utterly heartrending), Rebecca Herbst (it's been about a decade since I've seen her act this well...the scene where she cried over Em's body made me weep, and I didn't even care about Natalia Livingston's Emily), Leslie Charleston and John Ingle (goddamn it, GH writers, when you actually give the vets something to do, they deliver! give Monica and Edward storylines for a change!!!). Also good: the Ric/Alexis rapprochement.

One Life To Live: Up until a few months ago, OLTL was one of the dreckiest soaps on TV. It suffered from GH's Too Many Maniacs syndrome, and focused on a few characters, none of them vets. But since head writer Dena Higley was replaced by Labine protege Ron Carlivati, the show has increasingly rocked, making intelligent, delightful use of its core characters (notably Viki and Dorian) and introducing new characters who actually don't suck. And not a maniac among them! This week's bedroom farce in which Dorian winds up in bed with her ex, David (played by the hot and hilarious Tuc Watkins) has been marvelous, as has been Viki's budding romance with Charlie, and the gold-digging antics of David's new wife Alex (the fabulous, newly returned Tonja Walker). It's especially wonderful to see the mature women of the show (again, Viki and Dorian) get to have front-burner love stories. My only fear is what may happen to the show if they start shooting scab scripts...

Days of Our Lives is a mixed bag at the moment, but it does make pretty good use of vets (especially Bo and Hope), and it also has the marvelous pairing of EJ/Sami (OTP!). They're the Spike/Buffy of soapland...

Your discussion of OLTL is fascinating -- I've always thought they had some of the sharpest actresses around, and it sounds cool to front-burner Viki and Dorian. (Erika Slezak, REPRESENT.)

Wow, I didn't know OLTL had improved so much. If I'd known they'd gone back to frontburnering Vicki and Dorian, I might have started tivoing...not that I have that much time, ha ha. Still, might have to put it on the list!

Part of your GH good *is* that we get to see the vets, and it just reminds me how much it absolutely sucks that they leave them out of storylines for weeks, only to trot them out for a day or two. When was the last time we actually saw Jackie Zeman? Is she even still on contract??

I still have two days worth of RH to watch today, but I'm just really glad that Faith is out of the basement...
