and yet more Doctor Who...

Happy birthday to
flaming_muse and
keswindhover!!!
I seem to get such a ridiculously late start on Fridays. Today so far I've finished watching The Horns of Nimon, eaten waffles and drank orange pekoe tea, and I just put two loads of laundry in to wash. And it's almost 3 p.m., and I've loads of writing and reading to do...
But first, Doctor Who write-ups!
The Web Planet: I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of restoration job they do on the DVD of this one, as the copy I watched was pretty decrepit in places. Quite a magical story, in a Midsummer Night's Dream vein, with the nobly speechifying butterfly creatures. My favorite of the giant bugs were the larva guns- just adorable with their zillion little legs. The giant ants would've driven me nuts if I'd seen this ep a few years back when I was having ant problems in my apartment. Ian and Barbara are at their resourceful best, and there's some interesting Vicki-Barbara interaction early on. The First Doctor is by turns canny and steely and cackling away in a know-it-all mad-scientist manner...
The Ribos Operation: The more stories by Robert Holmes I see, the more impressed I am. Like RTD, he has a talent for writing rich, fully realized minor characters, and they abound in The Ribos Operation. If the other stories in the Key to Time saga are as good as this and The Pirate Planet, I'm really going to love them. It's probably my Romana II bias, but I do find Mary Tamm's acting a bit flat. Maybe I'll like her better when I've watched the Tom Baker-Mary Tamm commentary track to this story. (I started it last night, and there was a hilarious bit where Tom Baker said that all his life he's been on a quest to find a woman who doesn't understand him. "But they all understand me and see right through me!") There is a nice snarky vibe and grudging respect between the Fourth Doctor and Romana I.
The Horns of Nimon: This one features one of the silliest Doctor Who monsters ever (a sort of rubber-suited minotaur). But there's Four/Romana II, and Romana's wearing an adorable riding outfit. It's very shippy, between Romana excoriating the guy who leaves the Doctor to die, and the Doctor whispering "Romana" when he thinks he can't get her back from the silly monsters' planet. And Romana makes a sonic screwdriver!
Alas, now I've seen all the Four/Romana II eps! (Though I still haven't seen The Armageddon Factor, which has Lalla Ward in it.) I guess I'll just have to do a lot of rewatching. Speaking of which, I've already finished the first minute or so of my Four/Romana vid...
