today I saw Sherlock Holmes...

...at the lovely Vista Theatre. As I'd expected, I loved Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Enjoyed the slashiness. The action/adventure stuff I hadn't expected to adore, but I wasn't expecting to be actively bored by it. The story felt awfully thin, and the film ought to have been half an hour shorter. (I started checking my watch an hour in.) I didn't mind the non-canonical stuff, because I found RDJ's and Jude Law's performances so delightful. Rachel McAdams looked the part of Irene Adler, but she (and the actress who played Mary) annoyed the hell out of me with her nasal 21st-century delivery. I'd say the stuff I loved in the film could've been boiled down to about twenty minutes.
Will I go see the sequel? Absolutely, although I would much prefer to see Holmes and Moriarty go over the Reichenbach Falls and Watson grieve and then be overjoyed to find Holmes alive again, rather than whatever preposterous stolen weapon plot they will doubtless cook up.
Now I want to reread my Annotated Sherlock Holmes and rewatch The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and They Might Be Giants.
