It is Henna Day, and the henna is on my head. After I rinse out, I need to tackle my pre-WisCon to-do list.

Yesterday my mom and I had a lovely lunch at Rive Gauche to celebrate Mom's birthday.

Last night on the phone with my friend Mike, he mentioned 84 Charing Cross Road (book and movie) and we got to talking about its goodness, so I pulled out my copy and am rereading with great enjoyment.

Argh so much to do before WisCon!

Oh, I love that book and its sequel, The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street. I first read them in a dusty double-title paperback of my mother's with her maiden name written in the front, and so they are always entwined with thoughts of her. I also remember being struck especially by the difficulties of rationing in the post-war period in the UK... and of course by all of the love of books!

Happy Henna Day!

Oh, you HAVE to read Duchess; Helene travels to England!

Okay, you don't have to, but I do recommend it! :)

Did you know that Helene Hanff wrote a number of juvenile biographies, including a really excellent one of Queeen Elizabeth I? My daughter used it for her Biography Book report last fall, and I read it while it was in the house and learned a lot. It may have been 40 years old, but it was far better written and more engaging than any of the more recent Elizabeth books in the children's section--and just as informative, too, if not moreso.
