My story "Man-Size" (originally published in The Sockdolager and reprinted in People Change) has been podcasted in Tales to Terrify! It's my first podcasted fiction, and I'm very pleased, even though everything else in the world is terrifying.

Tomorrow is my birthday. A year ago I felt too sick (vertigo) to celebrate my birthday. This year I'm still not feeling great (vertigo), but better than a year ago. I had planned to have a birthday dinner with my friends next week, but what with coronavirus, that's not going to happen. (I may have a drink with a friend next week if that seems safe.) I am planning to celebrate my actual birthday with my mom tomorrow.

I have barely been able to focus on writing this week due to constant worrying. I hope next week I will manage to get some work done. I think it would help my mood.

I took a couple of vacation days (today and tomorrow) to celebrate my birthday. (Oh, the joy of not having to drive across town!) Today I went to Skylight Books, where I bought Kate Zambreno's O Fallen Angel. Then I went to Cafe Tropical and picked up a Cuban sandwich, guava & cream cheese pastry and cafe con leche for dinner.

Tomorrow night I'll be having birthday dinner with friends, then birthday lunch with my mom on Sunday.

What did you just finish reading?
Chicks Unravel Time: Women Journey Through Every Season of Doctor Who (edited by L.M. Myles and Deborah Stanish). This made me want to immediately park in front of the TV and watch/rewatch hours upon hours of classic Who (especially the Third Doctor, for some reason).

What are you reading now?
Still reading American Isis: The Life and Art of Sylvia Plath. This has lots of good material from letters (unpublished Plath letters and letters to Plath from friends). It's been a long time since I've read the earlier Plath biographies, but there's a fair bit of info new to me.

I've just started Seanan McGuire's Midnight Blue-Light Special.

What do you expect to read next?
Probably a General Hospital tie-in novel, Love in Maine by Connie Falconeri, which, according to Romantic Times, is actually quite good. (On GH, teenaged Molly wrote the book, then publishing magnate Kate Howard's alternate personality [!] Connie Falconeri stole it, added sex and got it published.) I suspect that when I read it, I'll keep remembering Molly's outraged editorializing at the book party: "Dear god, was that all one sentence?...'Grip on her hip?' It's like a nursery rhyme for perverts!"

In lieu of posting all the Ryan's Hope clips, here are the Muppets singing "Danny Boy."

It's a rainy weekend in LA, and I am home for the evening (avoiding St. Patrick's revelry, though maybe I'll have some Jameson later).

Went to my mom's for Chinese food and cinnamon cake to celebrate my birthday last night. Tomorrow night I'll have dinner at Taix (the conclusion of my birthday celebrations for the year!).

It's a few hours before my three-day weekend begins, a weekend which will include (on Saturday) a trip to LACMA to see the women surrealists exhibition and (on Sunday) Japanese food downtown.

I got an early birthday present from [community profile] ljs: an Amazon gift certificate, which I promptly used to buy a John le Carre novel!

General Hospital's ratings are up, thanks to Ron Carlivati's writing and the influx of OLTL and classic GH characters. (This week it was announced that Roger Howarth (Todd Manning) is on contract.) The show isn't perfect (I wish Robert Scorpio was staying on canvas longer), but it's worlds better than it was a month ago. Finola Hughes is doing a superb job as Anna Devane, and Carlivati is writing her in the nuanced, authentic way Bob Guza almost never did. My FL friends who were driven away from GH by craptastic writing: it is safe to come back!

My birthday's tomorrow, but since that's a Monday, I celebrated it this weekend. Yesterday I had brunch with my mom at Hugo's, where I had delicious Pasta Mama. Tonight I went to Taix for a birthday dinner with friends; I had salade nicoise with seared tuna.

Also this weekend I bought myself birthday cupcakes at Yummy Cupcakes in Burbank (a red velvet one and a Guinness cupcake). And, of course, I worked on the Jo book.

It's a bit odd to be celebrating while such awful things are happening in Japan. But I feel grateful to get to spend my birthday with family and friends.
