I saw In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States at LACMA today, and wow.

I got to see Leonora Carrington's self-portrait, one of my favorite paintings. Plus great work by Frida Kahlo, Remedios Varo, Dorothea Tanning, Kay Sage, etc., etc., and a bunch of artists I'd never heard of but clearly need to know more about. (Helen Lundeburg! Gertrude Abercrombie! Rosa Rolanda!)

Some other images from the exhibit are here.

It's New Year's Eve, and I'm nursing a small cold--but that's okay, because I was already planning on doing my usual caviar, champagne and DVDs New Year's Eve celebration at home. (But I think I'll have mimosas, for added vitamin C!)

Yesterday I went with C. to LACMA to see two fantastic exhibitions: William Eggleston (one of my favorite photographers) and Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915. So glad I managed to make it to those shows and the Eva Hesse show at the Hammer this week.

I'm not going to do a big 2010 wrap-up, but...

My vacation week is flying by. I've been noveling (and poeming), reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, watching wonderful Ryan's Hope (1975) reruns on SOAPnet, feeding the Garage Kitty (she's been a bit finicky lately--I think the cold weather has intermittently interfered with her ability to smell food), etc. Yesterday I saw the Eva Hesse paintings exhibit at the Hammer, which I was glad to get to before it closes.

Last night HBO showed the 1976 remake of Dark Victory, starring Elizabeth Montgomery and Anthony Hopkins--a TV movie I adored as a pre-teen and which I wish were on DVD (or even on YouTube). I think it may have been the first thing I ever saw Hopkins in (or was it Magic?), though I was of course already a massive Montgomery fan.

Today I went to Whole Foods to get caviar and other goodies for my traditional new-year's-eve-with-DVDs celebration. I haven't decided yet what I'm gonna watch, though...

Today I worked on chapter seven, and have now hit a slight block with it. I'm hoping tomorrow I'll figure it out--if not, I suppose I can just move ahead and then go back. So glad I have tomorrow off. I plan on a quiet day of writing, lounging around reading, etc.

Saw LACMA's Japanese Art 1615-1868 exhibit today with C. and D. (who now live walking distance from the museum), then had dinner at Marie Callender's (including a fairly potent Mojito). Now I'm gonna heat up the cherry pie I got there and watch Mad Men.

The news of the police raids in Minneapolis is--well, I'd like to say it's unbelievable, but unfortunately it's not. It is scary and infuriating, and I hope the press covers it further.
