Today at Gelson's:

Me: None of your cashiers are wearing masks.

Manager: Because of the mandate ending, if they're vaccinated, they don't wear masks.

Me: [after briefly considering dropping my full basket of groceries and walking out] They don't have to, but I'm sure it would make a lot of your customers more comfortable.

Manager: [gets a masked guy whose shift just ended to help me]

Masked Guy: [looks puzzled]

Me: You're the only one wearing a mask!

Masked Guy: Oh! My wife says, When you get home, you can take it off!

Up until now, about half of Gelson's cashiers were masked whenever I went in. A week or so ago, I was disconcerted that only one Trader Joe's cashier was masked, but yesterday at least half of them were. Meanwhile the cases are starting to rise again.

A highlight of this pandemically stressful day: my copy of Not One of Us #63 arrived in the mail! It includes my story "The Two Mrs. Mansfields" as well as work by Sonya Taaffe, Jennifer Crow, Alexandra Seidel, and others. I'm looking forward to reading the whole thing.

It occurred to me today that my mood today resembles my mood immediately after Trump's election. The horror of it, the fear I had that this guy was going to get us all killed. It's not that that feeling ever really went away in the years following the election. But that terror of a genuine crisis with this utterly inadequate person in charge...well, here we are. Fortunately there are governors and mayors and other people in office who I think are up to the task. But that doesn't make this moment any less awful.
